Our mission is to ensure safe, decent, and affordable housing; create opportunities for residents’ self-sufficiency and economic independence; and assure fiscal integrity by all program participants.

Our Mission

The Housing Authority of Sherman, Texas owns and operates 298 public housing units in developments across the city for families of low-income. The developments include 190 units for the elderly/disabled residents, 93 for families, and 15 for physically disabled residents.

The Housing Authority is committed to ensuring safe, decent, and affordable housing; creating opportunities for residents’ self-sufficiency and economic independence; and assuring fiscal integrity by all program participants.

In order to achieve this mission, we will:

  • Increase the availability of decent, safe, and affordable housing in the community.
  • Ensure equal opportunity in housing.
  • Promote self-sufficiency and asset development of families and individuals.
  • Improve community quality of life and economic viability.

In order to meet these goals, during the past year the Housing Authority:

  • Implemented the on-going capital improvement program in an effort to preserve and improve the public housing stock.
  • Ensured equal housing opportunity for all by providing fair housing programs and brochures.
  • Offered programs to residents such as adult education classes and other supportive services to promote self-sufficiency. 
  • Maintained a well-balanced income mix in the public housing developments in an effort to improve community quality of life and economic viability.
  • Received training to fully understand and take advantage of opportunities in the new laws and regulations to better serve the residents and community.

Those We Serve

The Housing Authority of Sherman recognizes the residents as the ultimate customers. The Authority meets the housing needs of more than 481 low-income residents. During the past year, the Housing Authority averaged a 2% vacancy rate. The Housing Authority is committed to productive results with sensitivity and concern for the dignity of every person served.

The success of the Housing Authority would not be possible without the active involvement of the residents. The resident council meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. The council consists of a solid core group of residents who volunteer their time and efforts. Working as a team has produced positive results in making the community a better place to live.

Modernization

The Housing Authority receives annual allocations based on a national formula set by the Federal Government through the Capital Fund Program. These funds are used for physical improvements to the existing housing stock and management improvements. The residents are actively involved in the development of the capital fund programs.
