Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my application?

Check your place in line online on the Waiting Lists page. We do not give application status by phone.

How much do I owe?

Your rent and any added charges, such as utilities, are on the notice posted on your door. Staff do not quote balances by phone.

How do I pay my rent?

By check or money order at the office or by mail. Online payment is coming soon. See Rent & Payments for other ways to pay.

How do I report a repair?

Call 903-893-3139. Online work orders are coming within the next 30 days. For an emergency after hours, call the same number; calls are forwarded to on-call staff.

Can I smoke in my unit?

No. As HUD requires for all public housing, smoking is not allowed inside units, in indoor common areas or the office, or within 25 feet of buildings. See SHA's smoke-free policy on the ACOP & Policies page.

Do I have to do community service?

HUD requires each adult resident who is not exempt to do 8 hours a month of community service or self-sufficiency activities, such as work training or classes. Many people are exempt, including people 62 or older, people with disabilities who cannot do it, and people who work. We check this at your annual recertification; ask us if you are not sure whether you are exempt.

When did I move in?

Your move-in date is on your lease.

My income or household changed. What do I do?

Report it within 10 calendar days using the change form on the Forms page.

Can I walk into the office?

Office visits are by appointment. Book a visit online.

How do I ask for a reasonable accommodation?

Use the Reasonable Accommodation Request on the Forms page, or ask any staff member for help.

When is rent due, and when is it late?

Rent is due on the 1st and is late after the 7th, with a $10.00 late charge. See Rent & Payments.

How long can a guest stay?

Tell the office if a guest will stay more than 7 days in a row, or more than 24 days in a year. Longer stays need written approval. See Part I, Section G of the Dwelling Lease (on the ACOP & Policies page).

How much notice do I give before moving out?

At least 15 calendar days, in writing, delivered to the office or mailed.

I applied. Why haven't I heard anything?

Applications are handled first come, first served. We contact applicants by email or phone when it is their turn. Check your spam or junk folder, and keep your contact information current in your application. If you do not respond when we contact you, we move on to the next applicant.

Can I apply now?

Not right now. Our waiting list is closed and not taking new applications. If you already applied, check your place in line on the Waiting Lists page.

Do you have Section 8?

No. Sherman Housing Authority manages public housing. We do not offer Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. For a voucher, contact the Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) at 903-893-2161.

Does it cost money to apply?

No. There is never a fee to apply for public housing.
